Chapter 12

Cara

“How was last night?” Eloise asks when she slides into the back of Terry’s SUV next to me.

“Amazing,” I say, and even I can hear how dreamy my voice sounds.

“So, do you think you’re going to pick him?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. Everything is easy and comfortable with Beau, and his mom is a sweetheart. But I can't stop thinking about Ace either, and how amazing those dates were with him.”

Suddenly, I remember I still haven’t read Ace’s texts. I grab my phone and open them up.

Ace: Saw TMZ. Sorry we got caught kissing. How does the other guy feel about it?

Ace: Do you have a minute to talk?

Ace: Should I make a statement? My PR rep is saying not to, but I want to set the record straight.

Ace: I guess you’re busy.

Ace: Call me tomorrow.

“Shit,” I mumble under my breath and quickly call him back.

“I was beginning to wonder if you didn’t care about me anymore,” he teases by way of greeting.

“Not possible. I’ll always care for you. Sorry about last night. I was busy and didn’t have my phone on me.”

“It’s okay. It happens. So, should I make a statement?” he asks.

“No, I think it’s best if we just leave it alone. If I’m asked about it in interviews, I’m going with, ‘My private life is private,’ and if they don’t drop it, I’ll end the interview. It’s none of their goddamn business.”

“You could just be my girl and we could tell them that,” Ace says.

“It's not that easy, though. You never wanted that before. I'm not a toy; you can't just decide you want something more serious because someone else decided I was worth their time and you think I'm yours now.” My voice catches at the end, the emotions trying to bubble over.

“That’s not what this is,” he says defensively.

“I’m sorry. I’m just confused. I wish it was easier, but I like both of you,” I say on a sigh, trying to calm down.

“I know. I didn’t make this easier either, but I need you, Cara.” His voice sounds sincere and there is emotion behind it.

“I know. Look, I’ve got to go. I’ll call you later.”

I end the call and throw my head back.

“He says he needs me, but what does that mean?” I whisper.

Eloise puts her hand on my shoulder. “He’s never been good with relationships, which is why you guys had what you used to have. You knew that. Maybe this is all he can give you. You have to decide if that’s enough.”

I nod. “Fuck, I hate this. I like them both. But do I go with the Beau, who’s sweet and dependable, but new and unknown? Or do I go with Ace, who’s guarded, but familiar and almost safe in a way?”

“I don’t have that answer. You’ll just have to listen to your heart.”

“My heart has never made the right decision in the past,” I whine.

She giggles and rubs my shoulder.

“I don’t know what else to say,” she says with a comforting smile.
